TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists and nurses involved in smoking cessation therapy. Estimated time to complete this activity is 1.5 to 2.0 hours.

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The purpose of this program is to provide up-to-date information on smoking cessation therapy to clinicians in order to minimize the health damage of tobacco addiction.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This program is intended to educate clinicians about the clinical decision-making tools to optimize success of smoking cessation therapy.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this lesson, the pharmacist, nurse, and physician should be able to:
  1. State the latest prevalence trends of adult and teenage smoking in the United States,
  2. Explain the toxic actions and health complication of tobacco use with emphasis on nicotine's addictive properties
  3. Describe the latest technologies and delivery forms used in nicotine replacement therapy
  4. Name at least three important conclusions of the 2004 Surgeon General's report on smoking, and
  5. Discuss the pros and cons of each nicotine replacement product.
