TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nurses, and registered dietitians.

GOAL
To provide clinically useful information regarding the self-monitoring of blood glucose and discuss approaches to properly evaluate currently available blood glucose monitors for individual patient use.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Define self-monitoring of blood glucose and its role in evaluating blood glucose monitors;
  2. Review the differences among the current array of blood glucose monitors;
  3. Discuss the guidelines and recommendations of independent organizations in assessing the precision and accuracy of blood glucose monitors;
  4. Describe the criteria for selection of a blood glucose monitor for individual patient use; and
  5. Identify the role of the clinician in educating and counseling patients in the evaluation and selection of a blood glucose monitor.
