BIOGRAPHY John W. Devlin, PharmD, BCPS, FCCM, FCCP, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Northeastern University, an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University, and a Clinical Pharmacist in the medical ICU at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. Dr. Devlin has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers and textbook chapters and presented more than 75 research abstracts - most of which pertain to various areas of critical care pharmacotherapy. He is a member of the editorial board of both Critical Care Medicine and Pharmacotherapy. His research is primarily focused on the detection and treatment of delirium in the ICU and the use and assessment of sedation in the critically ill.

TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is intended for hospital pharmacists who manage patients requiring sedation in intensive care and perioperative settings.
EDUCATIONAL NEEDS Patients in intensive care or undergoing procedures frequently require pain management. Assessment of pain, sedation, agitation, and delirium with validated scales is a critical part of maintaining the balance between oversedation and undersedation. Practical application of recent results from patient management trials and from pharmaceutical clinical trials can enhance the practice of sedation and patient outcomes.
