Goal

To explore risk factors as well as discuss the toxic effects of certain drugs and drugs to avoid during lactation.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Pharmacists
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology and risk factors for drug-induced congenital malformations.
  • List reliable drug information resources for safe drug use during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Describe safe pharmacological and non-drug treatment options for common acute and chronic medical conditions occurring during pregnancy.
  • List the drugs that are incompatible with breastfeeding..

Pharmacy Technicians
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Name four factors that influence a drug’s teratogenic potential.
  • Identify four resources that provide reliable drug safety information during pregnancy and lactation.
  • List seven medications that are contraindicated for use during pregnancy.
  • Name three medications that are incompatible with breastfeeding
