What This Certificate Program Offers

  • Identify patients that may lack knowledge of how to monitor their blood sugar levels and when to refer them to the pharmacist for consultation.
  • Identify patients that may be at risk for diabetes or those that exhibit symptoms of diabetes and refer them to the pharmacist for consultation.
  • List some common safety concerns about insulin products, including administration and dispensing.
  • Identify the role of the pharmacy technician in Medication Therapy Management services, the importance of the Complete Medication Review and how patients with diabetes can benefit from MTM

Course Outline

The program includes 9 cutting edge modules:


Module 1. Diabetes Defined: Pathophysiology

This module provides pharmacy technicians with the foundation to understand the pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), focusing on Type 1 DM and Type 2 DM. Diabetes is one of the most frequently encountered chronic health conditions in the pharmacy setting.

2.0 T-designated Credit hours


Module 2. Identifying Oral Agents Used to Treat Diabetes

In this section pharmacy technicians will learn current treatment guidelines for patients with Type 2 Diabetes, focusing on oral agents. This module contains drug dosing recommendations as well as adverse reactions of these agents. Open-ended questions to ask patients who are taking oral diabetes agents to assess the need for a consultation with a pharmacist are also included.

Module 3. Non-Insulin Injectable Diabetes Medications

This module covers the proper use and mechanism of action of the newer class of agents to treat diabetes; the non-insulin injectables. These drugs work in a variety of ways to achieve diabetes control. Injection technique, barriers to use, and drawbacks to this type of therapy, as well as tips of when to refer a patient for a pharmacist consultation are included.

Module 4. Blood Glucose Monitoring

This module covers an essential piece to understanding how to achieve good diabetes control; self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG). SMBG is the basis for any diabetes program that is established in the pharmacy. Interpretation of data will be discussed as well as accuracy of meters and the proper way to use home blood glucose meters.

Module 5. Understanding Insulin Therapy

This module covers a comprehensive review of insulin therapy in diabetes care, both for the 1 and type 2 patient. This course covers the principals of basal/bolus insulin regimens as well as how insulin is dosed. Injection techniques and barriers to insulin therapy are discussed. This 2.5-credit course takes a deep dive into the why and how to develop a good treatment plan for patients using insulin.

Module 6. Insulin Safety

This patient safety focused module covers the potential hazards of insulin use and how to inject insulin accurately and safely. The importance of understanding how insulin is dosed (in units) and why only insulin syringes must be used when injecting insulin is highlighted along with other safety concerns of this important medication in diabetes care.

Module 7. Exercise for Better Health

This module addresses the benefits of exercise in patients with diabetes. This segment includes different types of exercise that fit all patient profiles, even those with existing diabetic complications.

Module 8. Healthy Eating with Diabetes

This module provides information on how patients with diabetes can achieve good eating habits. Portion sizes and proper understanding of food labels are discussed, as well as what a balanced diet looks like.

Module 9. The Role of the Pharmacy Technician in Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Services and the Importance of the Complete Medication Review

This module explains how MTM works in a pharmacy along with how patients are identified for an MTM review. It also highlights the importance of the Completed Medication Review and how the pharmacy technician can be involved in this process.
